LiveJournal Spammers
Does anybody else resent the incredible indignity of having a serious post defaced by a spammer?

My post about my son's burial has received multiple attacks from people (yes, people are behind this crap, not robots) trying to sell timeshares and fake viagra.

I know it's random -- the people running the bots can have no way of knowing that they've invaded a very somber space -- but they still deserve serious opprobrium.

The infernal gall!

I, too, have been victim of the same thing. For some reason, my post on my father's death has received more spam than any other post! And the post with the second most spam has been one I wrote about the death of Tom Disch. I'm almost thinking of giving up LJ due to its lousy spam filter and sticking to my own blog.

BTW—will you guys be in Reno?

Oh, Mary. I send you a hug. Yes, the posts I've had spammed most often have been about friends I've taken care of while they were dying of cancer. It's gut-wrenching every time I have to mark a suspicious comment as spam and delete it.

I find I prefer the Russian spam, since at least I don't have to understand anything about it as I get rid of it.

Russian Spam
The awful thing is, you can actually get it translated using googletranslate. The other awful thing is, I always worry that it's from somebody I met at Eurocon.

Good to hear from you.

spamming's gone through the roof on my account, but i suspect most of the spammers, the actual people doing it, probably don't read english. from my conversations with LJ, most of the spam comes from people hired in russia or india to make thousands of accounts and post spam from the.

sorry this happened in the worst places. and so sorry about your son.

I have no idea what measures they use to determine what posts they'll spam, but I'm so sorry that was the one they picked.

I suggest going into your profile and changing the permissions for a while to "allow only friends" to comment. I do this every so often, and it seems to turn them off from spamming me for a while. Then I return the setting to "filter non-friends," which is a bit of a pain if I get someone from, say, Facebook over here commenting and I have to approve it, but far less irritating than having spam for all the world to suffer.

I'm with you one hundred percent on that, Mary. Sometimes I get a note in email that there's a post I recognize as spam, but the original blog is so far back I can't find it easily. You'd think LJ could do a bewtter job with this problem.
